PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and a method for display luminance control, which suppress the dazzle caused by high-luminance display over an entire screen while emphasizing the luminance change. SOLUTION: An operation circuit 15 obtains a multiplication coefficientαon the basis of integral values of a red signal R, a green signal G, and a blue signal B. A multiplier 12 multiplies the red signal R, the green signal G, and the blue signal B by the multiplication coefficientαand writes a correction red value R', a correction green value G', and a correction blue value B' being the result in a frame memory 4. The frame memory 4 outputs the correction red value R', the correction green value G', and the correction blue value B' to a driving circuit 2 at a prescribed timing. The driving circuit 2 convert the correction red value R', the correction green value G', and the correction blue value B' received from the frame memory 4 to prescribed driving voltage waveforms and drives a display panel 3 on the basis of these waveforms and a control timing signal Q from a sequencer 1. Thus a picture is displayed on the display panel 3.
