PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hair protecting agent having dechlorination ability, hydroxy radical scavenging ability, excellent safety of the skin, low irritation and pharmaceutically required sufficient storage stability and a hair care composition using the hair protecting agent. SOLUTION: This hair protecting agent is characterized by comprising a compound represented by general formula (1) (R1, R2, R3 and R4 are each independently a hydroxy group, an ester bond-containing group derived from a hydroxy group and an organic acid or inorganic acid, a glycoside group or a group derived from two adjacent hydroxy groups and an aldehyde or a ketone with the proviso that R1 and R2 are not hydroxy groups at the same time) or an ascorbic acid derivative being its salt as an active ingredient. This hair care composition comprises the protecting agent.
