PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain equivalent damping force in a drawing process as in a compressing process, by improving bad influence on a vibration control function caused by elasticity of oil, in a large-sized hydraulic damper having a large capacity. SOLUTION: This hydraulic damper 1 has a cylinder 12, a piston rod 13 and an oil storage chamber 14. An oil suction passage 12e is provided in the lid 12a of the cylinder, and an oil suction valve 15 is attached to it. The oil suction valve 15 allows suction of oil from the oil storage chamber 14 to an oil chamber A. An oil suction passage 13c is provided in the piston rod 13, and an oil suction valve 17 and an orifice 2a are attached to it. The oil suction valve 17 allows suction of oil from the oil chamber A to an oil chamber B, and the orifice 2a gives a resistance to the oil suction. An oil passage 12f is provided in the lid 12c, and a pressure adjusting valve 16 is attached to it. The oil adjusting valve 16 allows distribution of oil from the oil chamber B to the oil storage chamber 14 while restricting it. In a compressing process, oil pressure in the oil chamber A is heightened by the action of the orifice 2a, and a difference in oil pressures is produced between the oil chamber A and the oil chamber B. Therefore, the elastic contraction of hydraulic oil becomes small, and vibration damping effect almost equivalent to that in a drawing process is obtained.
