PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain both a liquid crystal composition having a low temperature dependence of viscosity without reducing liquid crystal characteristics such as threshold potential, steepness, etc., and a liquid crystal display element having a high speed of response and a high contrast using the liquid crystal composition. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition comprises one or more kinds of compounds represented by general formula I (R1 and R2 are each a 0-5C alkyl group; s and t are each 0-3) as a first component and one or more kinds of components represented by general formula II or III (rings A, B and C are each a 1,4-phenylene group, a naphthalene-2,6-diyl group, a phenanthrene-2,7-diyl group, a trans-2,4-cyclohexylene group, a trans-1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl group, a pyridine-2,5-diyl group, a pyrimidine-2,5-diyl group or the like: m is 0-2; Z1 and Z2 are each a single bond, CH2CH2, CH2O, CH=CH, COO, C≡C or the like) as a second component.
