PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce in size and weight, and ensure high rigidity. SOLUTION: In this variable valve system of the internal combustion engine 1, a roller 15 held to be slidable to a rocker arm 12 is moved to a cam shaft direction by a changeover means, and the roller 15 is selectively brought into abutment to a cam 8a for high speed or a cam 8b for low speed thereby making a lift amount of an exhaust valve (valve) 4 to be variable. In this variable valve system of the internal combustion engine 1, the roller 15 is fitted and held to be slidable to a groove 12a formed to the rocker arm 12. Since this system dispenses with a conventional roller shaft and the roller 15 is directly supported to the rocker arm 12, a width of the roller 15 is reduced thereby reducing the size and weight of the variable valve system, and the high rigidity is ensured.
