The present invention can be used in the suspension of vehicles for automatically modifying the resistance characteristics of a damper according to the amplitude of the defects on a road layout. This method involves modifying the flow section of a channel connecting the chambers of the damper according to the pressure difference between said chambers, wherein the movement of the damper piston is converted into a displacement of a damper part that influences the dimensions of the flow section of said channel. This method can be realised using various types of dampers, e.g. using a mobile flap mounted on the piston and co-operating with an helical guide or using a mobile bearing co-operating with a helical guide and connected to the piston through another helical guide.
