PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element and a display device realizing bright display by making rays of light which are emitted from a light emission player contribute efficiently to display. SOLUTION: In this light emitting element, a polarized light separating means 5 is arranged between a light emitting layer 100 and a phase shift plate 600. The polarized light separating means reflects components of circularly polarized rays of light which are to be converted into linearly polarized rays of light which are to be absorbed in a polarizing plate 600 by the action of the phase shift plate among rays of light whose wavelengths are included in wavelengths of one part or the whole of wavelengths being within the luminous wavelength range of the light emission layer and also are in the wavelength range narrower than a visible wavelength range and which direct to the polarized light separating means side from the light emission layer side, and transmits rays of light other than the components of the circularly polarized ray of light.
