摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain both a nematic liquid crystal composition having characteristics of simultaneously achieving improvements in steepness and speed of response and having a remarkably high speed of response especially in a low-temperature range and a low temperature dependence of Vth and a liquid crystal display extremely useful for STN and TN-LCD, having a slight change in threshold potential in a wide temperature range and an actualized high-speed response when the composition is used as a liquid crystal display element. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition is characterized in that the composition comprises one or more kinds of compounds represented by general formula (I) as a first component and one or more kinds of compounds represented by general formula (II) as a second component, has >=75 deg.C nematic phase-isotropic phase transition temperature, <=-20 deg.C smectic phase or solid phase-nematic phase transition temperature and 0.07-0.30 anisotropy (Δn) of refractive index.
