PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical filter selectively cutting off an infrared ray and light with a wavelength deteriorating color purity, bringing about no malfunction and excellent in color balance. SOLUTION: In the optical filter provided with a filter layer containing a dyestuff and a polymer binder on a transparent supporting body, a pentamethine-, heptamethine- or nonamethine-cyanin dyestuff containing a basic nucleus composed of a dibenzofuran ring or a fluorene ring condensed to a pyrrole ring is used as the dyestuff.
