PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an instrument and a method that can completely contactlessly observe a rolling element in a bearing, and eliminate requirement for calibration. SOLUTION: The rolling element W of the bearing serving as an object to be measured is interposed between a pair of faced bearing washers 1, 2. The washers 1, 2 are synchronizingly rotated normally and reversely each other at the same speed to make revolution of the rolling element W become stationary. The rolling element W is image-picked up by image-pick-up means 5, 6 such CCD cameras, and the behavior of the rolling element W is analyzed based on an image data by an image analyzing means 7. The bearing washers 1, 2 are made of hard transparent glass, and silhouettes thereof are image-picked up using a lighting means 19. Marking is acceptable to be applied to the rolling element W to be image-picked up.
