The invention relates to a process for producing ethanol from the cellulosic component of municipal solid waste, where the cellulosic component is already defibered, the process comprising the following steps: a) treating the cellulosic defibered component with concentrated sulphuric acid in a weight ratio of 1 : 1, at a temperature of 30...80 degree C to obtain a partially hydrolized mixture; b) diluting the partially hydrolized mixture with water at a temperature of 80...100 degree C to obtain a diluted mixture containing 2 to 6 parts of water to one part of partially hydrolized mixture, the parts being expressed by weight; c) stirring the diluted mixture to obtain a digested material; d) removing the solids from the digested mixture by filtration, in order to obtain a filter liquor; e) separating the filter liquor into a solution containing acid and another solution containing sugars; f) concentrating the solution containing sugars up to a content of 12...14 % sugar; g) adjusting the pH of the concentrated solution containing sugars up to the value of 6; h) fermenting the solution resulted during the step (g) with yeast in order to obtain a beer wort; i) removing the yeast from the beer wort to obtain a filtered beer wort and j) recovering the ethanol from the beer wort.
