PURPOSE: A coolant temperature controlling apparatus for a water cooled engine is provided to achieve a maximized engine cooling efficiency by allowing for accurate open/shut operation of the thermostat valve. CONSTITUTION: A thermostat(1) is mounted between a thermostat cover(2) having a radiator connector(21) and a thermostat case(3) having an engine connector(31). A coolant inlet(16) formed at the engine connector side has a top which is decreased so as to form a horizontal portion(5). A flow guide wall(4) having a size half-splitting the inner diameter of the coolant inlet is formed at the inside of the horizontal portion. The coolant passes underneath the flow guide wall, flows underneath a pellet portion(15) of the thermostat, and flows upward. The thermostat operates in an accurate manner by lengthening the time taken for the coolant to pass through the pellet portion.
