PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tapering assist that can position one end of a workpiece with high precision and can facilitate the elimination of runout in rotation when mounted on a tooling machine, and a tapering method that uses the tapering assist. SOLUTION: The tapering assist 1 comprises a body 2 as a base, a work holding part 3 movably held on the body, and a driving part 4 for moving and positioning the work holding part, in which a central axis O of the body and a central axis P of the work holding part form a given angle A. The central axis O of a cylindrical portion 2a of the body and a central axis Q of a cylindrical portion 3a of the work holding part are aligned when a spacer 5 is held between the body and the work holding part.
