PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric water heater with which a proper heating control is performed by detecting the temperature of a proper location, and energy can be saved, and also, water of the whole of a tank or one portion of the tank can be efficiently boiled. SOLUTION: This electric water heater is equipped with a tank 7, a separator plate 8a, a hot plate heater 4, a thermistor 10, and a thermistor 14. In this case, the separator plate 8a partitions the tank 7 into a main tank 7a on the upper side and a subsidiary tank 7b on the lower side, and at the same time, has a communication hole 11 which communicates both tanks. The hot plate heater 4 heats the subsidiary tank 7b. The thermistor 10 detects the water temperature of the subsidiary tank 7b. The thermistor 14 detects the water temperature of the main tank 7a. When the water in the tank 7 is heated, power is fed to the hot plate heater 4 until the detecting temperature of the thermistor 14 becomes a set temperature. When the water in the subsidiary tank 7b alone is heated, power is fed to the hot plate heater 4 until the detecting temperature of the thermistor 10 becomes the set temperature.
