PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically control the pressure in a treating tank according to the degree of swelling of air-containing vessels and present deformation, etc., of the air-containing vessels in thermal sterilization of the air-containing vessels. SOLUTION: This apparatus for thermal sterilization for the air-containing vessels 6 is capable of housing the air-containing vessels 6 in the treating tank 7, heating the interior of the treating tank 7 and thereby thermally sterilizing foods in the air-containing vessels 6. The apparatus is equipped with pressurizing means 5 and 10 for pressurizing the interior of the treating tank 7, decompressing means 4 and 11 for decompressing the interior of the treating tank 7, a camera 1 for taking in images of the air-containing vessels 6 contained in the treating tank 7 as an electric signal and a pressure judging device 3 for comparing the images of the air-organic vessels 6 taken in with the camera 1 with images of the air- containing vessels 6 under standard conditions and determining the extent of pressure in the treating tank 7. The pressure judging device 3 is capable of increasing the pressure in the treating tank 7 by the pressurizing means 5 and 10 when the swelling of the air-containing vessels 6 from the standard conditions is detected and reducing the pressure in the treating tank 7 by the decompressing means 4 and 11 when the shrinkage of the air-containing vessels 6 from the standard conditions is detected.
