摘要 PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal display element which is improved in the characteristics of the visual field angle, solves the problems occurring in a rubbing treatment and has a high contrast ratio over the entire direction and the process for production of this element. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal display element has a pair of substrates 1, 2 which respective do not possess a uniform orientation direction, a liquid crystal layer 3 which is a liquid crystal layer 3 contg. a chiral nematic liquid crystal or nematic liquid crystal clamped between a pair of the substrates 1 and 2 and in which the orientation directions of the liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer 3 are macroscopically distributed at an equal probability in nearly all directions with respect to the intra-surface direction of the substrates in the state of not impressing an electric field thereto, a pair of polarizers 5a, 5b which are arranged on the outer sides of a pair of the substrates 1, 2 and a pair of optical compensation plates 4a, 4b which are a pair of optical compensation plates 4a 4b arranged between a pair of these polarizes 5a and 5b and having the positive uniaxial double refractive index possessing optical axes within the plane the optical axes of which are orthogonal to each other, and are arranged diagonally with the polarization axes of the polarizers 5, 5b.
