PURPOSE:To obtain a variable length encoder in which the capacity of a transmission buffer can be made small, and the necessary capacity of the transmission buffer can easily be set. CONSTITUTION:Fixed length data 3 outputted from a variable length encoder 2 are shifted by a barrel shift circuit 19 according to shift amounts, valid data length 4 is converted into mask data by a data length/mask converter 18, and shifted by a barrel shift circuit 24. The data shifted by the both barrel shift circuits 19 and 24 are written in latch B 22 and 26 by mask circuits 20 and 25, and the flag of a stuff insertion position is added to the data of the latch B 22 by a latch or buffer 23 when the stuff insertion position flag is valid, and the data are outputted to a transmission buffer 50. Then, mask data indicating the valid data position of the data at which the flag of the stuff insertion position is risen are added to the data of the latch B 26 by a latch or buffer 28, and the data are outputted to the transmission buffer 50. |
