PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a range-finding device for a camera capable of rapidly detecting an optimum principal subject by accurately eliminating miscellaneous subjects from a photographic scene. SOLUTION: In this range-finding device for a camera, the subject distance information (phase difference of subject luminance signal) of each range-finding area is obtained by a photoelectric conversion element 4 where a plurality of range finding areas are arranged while including a peripheral area outside a photographing range, and grouping by the adjacent range-finding area showing a numerical value within a previously set range is performed from the obtained subject distance information, then, the group laid on the inside and the outside of the photographing area is eliminated, and the range-finding arithmetic processing of the principal subject is performed according to the range-finding result of the group existing only in the photographing area, and the closest distance is selected from the range-finding results and set as final range-finding output. |
