PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dividing method for object group particularly satisfactorily suitable to object retrieval. SOLUTION: This invention relates to a dividing method for object group comprising an initialization step for determining a section having an optimum number of classes and a step for correcting this section in order to provide a section having a class having optimum contents from the point of object retrieval. This invention also relates to a multi-level dividing method for object group using the above dividing method for forming a tree-like object structure. This invention further relates to a retrieval method for retrieving the number of specified objects closest to the thus-obtained tree-like example.
