PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hand scanner that is suitably downsized by eliminating the need for a photo interrupter detecting a moving amount of a drive roller so as to reduce the number of components of a variable-speed mechanism thereby reducing the cost. SOLUTION: A rotary encoder 5 is placed on an optical path of a luminous flux 10 received by pixels of a CCD optical sensor 2 not used for reading an original 9 and the pixels of the CCD optical sensor 2 not used for reading the original 9 are used to receive the luminous flux passing through a slit 5a of the rotary encoder 5.
