PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element in which a liquid crystal layer containing a liquid crystal composition showing a cholesteric phase at room temperature is held between a pair of substrates and to provide a liquid crystal display element which is produced by stacking a plurality of liquid crystal display elements, which can be driven at a low-voltage, which is bright with good contrast and a wide temperature range for the capability of practical use. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display elements R, G, B having liquid crystal layers 10r, 10g, 10b containing liquid crystal compositions 6r, 6g, 6b, respectively and showing a cholesteric phase at room temperature each held between a pair of electrode substrates 11, 12, the liquid crystal composition is a chiral nematic liquid crystal composition containing a mixture of a chiral material and a nematic liquid crystal and contains the chiral material by 7 to 40 wt.% of the whole liquid crystal composition. The nematic liquid crystal component shows 0.13 to 0.23 refractive index anisotropy and 0.50 to 1.10 V electro-optical threshold voltage (V10%) and 1.15 to 1.80 V electro-optical saturation voltage (V90%) measured by the measurement method specified by JIS C7072.
