PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve contrast by suppressing light leakage caused by spacers. SOLUTION: In respective substrates placed opposite to each other via a liquid crystal, pixel electrodes composed of transparent conductive layers, extending in the x direction and arranged in proximity in a row in the y direction, are formed on the liquid crystal surface of the one substrate. Opposite electrodes composed of the transparent conductive layers, extending in the y direction and arranged in proximity in a row in the x direction, are formed on the liquid crystal surface of the other substrate. Bead-shaped spacers coexisting in the liquid crystal and securing a gap between each of the substrates are provided. The dielectric anisotropy of the liquid crystal is >=8 and the surfaces of the spacers are coated with alkyl groups.
