Method for hydrogen sulfide abatement using sulfur oxidizing bacteria

A method for producing sulfuric acid from a H2S-containing gas stream is described. The method involves introducing a H2S-containing gas stream and oxygen containing gas into a bioscrubber through a first gas port and venting H2S-depleted gas through a second gas port. The bioscrubber comprises at least one bioreactor vessel and acidophilic sulfur oxidizing bacteria adherent to a support medium contained by the vessel. The gas flow is reversed after a period of time ranging from about 12 hours to about 5 days, such that the H2S-containing gas stream is introduced into the bioscrubber through the second gas port and the H2S-depleted gas is vented through the first gas port. Sulfuric acid is then collected.
