An antimicrobial composition comprising: i) At least one substance of formula (I), wherein Z is a phosphorus or sulfur oxyacid residue, one of R1 and R2 is -OH and the other of R1 and R2 is a saturated or unsaturated fatty acid residue with at least 7 carbon atoms and R3 is H. ii) At least one antimicrobial. The substance of formula (I) is present in an amount which enhances the effect of the at least one antimicrobial. The antimicrobial composition is useful for the treatment of bacterial, fungal, viral and protozoal infection.
