PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerating machine which achieves an efficient refrigeration while allowing prolonged preservation of foods. SOLUTION: In the refrigerating machine 1 which is provided with a body 2 having refrigerating chambers 6, 7, and 8 formed therein and doors 3 and 3 openably installed on the body 2, electric field cutoff layers 13 and 14 each comprising an electrode plate 15 to which a high voltage is applied, earth plates 16 arranged facing each other paralleling the electrode plate 15 while being grounded and an insulating material surrounding a region between the electrode plate 15 and the earth plates 16 are provided in the refrigerating chambers 6, 7 and 8. Foods are arranged in the region between the electrode plate 15 and the earth plates 16 and a high voltage is applied to the electrode plate 15 to generate a weak current with a high voltage between the electrode plate 15 and the earth plates 16. With such an arrangement, cell membranes of microorganisms such as bacteria are destroyed reversibly without damaging tissues of the frozen foods thereby enabling preservation with a higher safety.
