The lock for safety belts in vehicles, which belts are provided with a tightening device which engages on said lock, is provided with a compensation mass (42) which prevents an inertia-conditioned movement of the release key (28) in the actuation direction at the end of the tightening stroke. The compensation mass is formed by a lever which is swivellably mounted on the housing and has a toothed element (44) which is in a permanent intermeshing engagement with a toothed rack (40) of the release key. Every time the release key is actuated, the lever (42) is swivelled, as a result of which its ease of movement is ensured even after the lock has been in use for a long time. ……
