PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a background detection method capable of discriminating density information acquired from a non-document area from density information corresponding to the background of a document. SOLUTION: This method comprises a process for deciding a full page statistical value from pixels selected in a scanned document, a process for deciding a sub-area background statistical value from the pixels selected in the sub-area of the scanned document, a process for deciding whether or not the sub-area background statistical value corresponds to image data from the non-document area, a process for deciding whether or not the full page background statistical value is damaged, and a process for generating the valid full page background statistical valid when the full page background statistical value is damaged.
