Atmospheric pollution by flue gases from coal and gas-fired furnaces is prevented by inserting a heated, catalytic filter in the furnace chimney. The filter is made of spongy, porous asbestos or steatite which is kept a white heat by spraying on a fuel, e.g. a blower may be used to direct an air blast onto the filter, alcohol being injected into the air blast to give an atomised fuel spray onto the catalytic material.
|
