PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an yttrium sulfate fluorescent substance having high brightness at a low production cost without needing a special treatment for removing water and further without needing a high temperature heat treatment for enhancing the brightness, consequently providing a luminous layer for full color EL elements at practical use levels. SOLUTION: This sulfate fluorescent substance for the electroluminescent element is characterized by using yttrium sulfate as a matrix material and adding at least one arbitrary transition element or transition element compound as a luminous center.
