PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely receive even a large capacity of electronic mail data without repeating the occurrence of memory overflow. SOLUTION: When memory overflow occurs, a POP 3 protocol processing part 41 interrupts the reception of electronic mail data by the POP 3 and stores the counted value of pages in the interruption in a data memory area 35 as the number of interrupted pages. After then, this receiver is reconnected to a POP 3 server 10 to start the reception of residual interrupted electronic mail data. When the number of the pages received presently is smaller than the number of the interrupted pages as the result of comparing them, the data is judged to be equivalent to the portion of received pages. In the case of being equivalent to the portion of the received pages, the data is scrapped from a reception buffer 42 without receiving any processing. In the case of equivalent to the portion of pages which are not received yet, data is received, decoded and printed.
