PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an olefin-based copolymer having a cyclic structure, which comprises ethylene and dicyclopentadiene or tricyclopentadiene, and a cyclic olefin to be introduced at need, for copolymerization. SOLUTION: A catalyst comprising a metallocene compound represented by the formula H2C(R'mCp)(R"nCp)MX2 [wherein M is Zr or Hf; Cp is a group having a cyclopentadienyl skeleton; R' and R" are each a 1-20C hydrocarbon group; each of two X's which may be the same or different from each other, is a halogen atom, a hydrogen atom, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, a homogenate hydrocarbon group, an alkylamino group, an alkoxy group, an aryloxy group, a thioalkyl group, or a thioaryl group: m and n are each an integer of from 0 to 4, provided that m and n are not equal, and m+n is an integer of from 3 to 6] and an aluminoxane, is used as a catalyst.
