PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a data communication system in which throughput is enhanced. SOLUTION: A decision is made whether a mail is transmitted or received (step S1). In the case of transmission, maximum data rate of modem receiving channel is set at 26400 bit/s in V.34 mode (step S2), an ISP is called and mail data stored at a storage section is transmitted (step S3). In the case of reception, maximum data rate of modem transmitting channel is set at 26400 bit/s in V.34 mode (step S4), the ISP is called and mail data is received (step S5). Even in the case of a full duplex modem, data rate of the receiving channel is lowered at the time of transmitting data and data rate of the transmitting channel is lowered at the time of receiving data depending on an actual application thus reducing adverse effect on an actually required channel and enhancing throughput.
