A process for the selective production of acyclic polyalkylene amines involves reaction of diamines with NH3 and monoalkanol amines in the presence of a phosphorous containing catalyst. The catalyst is a thin film catalyst, prepared by coating a metal, plastic or carbon fiber support with at least one phosphorous containing substance. Independent claims are also included for; (1) A process for the preparation of the catalyst by application of at least one phosphorous containing substance onto a metal, plastic or carbon fiber support followed by drying and/or tempering of the support; and (2) The resulting thin film catalyst.
