Hydraulic control system, to vary the piston rod lengths in an IC motor and adjust the compression ratios during running, uses the motor oil as the hydraulic fluid to lock and unlock the piston sections

The internal combustion motor has piston rods with a variable length, to give adjustable compression ratios. A hydraulic control system (70) locks and unlocks the piston sections to change their length, using the oil passages linked to the existing motor oil pump (72). The hydraulic control has an intermediate store (76), a servo pump (78), a filter (79) and a flow path valve (80) which can be operated magnetically through the electronic motor control (82). To change the piston rod length, while the motor is running, the locking mechanism is released and the length changed during the firing cycle through inertia forces, and then the other locking mechanisms are locked.
