A proton conductor which comprises silicon oxide, a Brfnsted acid, and a carbonaceous material derivative obtained by introducing proton (H<+>)-releasing groups onto carbon atoms contained in a carbonaceous material which consists mainly of carbon. This proton conductor is produced through the steps of producing a compound comprising silicon oxide and a Brfnsted acid as major components by the sol-gel method and mixing the compound with a carbonaceous material derivative obtained by introducing proton (H<+>)-releasing groups onto carbon atoms contained in a carbonaceous material which consists mainly of carbon.
