<p>Surfactants of the general formula (1) which are free from phenyl ether groups derived from, e.g., nonylphenyl believed to be adversely influential on the environment, and have performances equivalent to those of reactive surfactants having phenyl ether groups; and emulsifying agents for emulsion polymerization, dispersants for suspension polymerization, or resin-modifying agents, comprising the surfactants; (1) wherein R1 is a branched aliphatic hydrocarbon group, a secondary aliphatic hydrocarbon group, or a branched aliphatic acyl group; AO and AO' are each oxyalkylene having 2 to 4 carbon atoms; L is a group of the general formula (2); z is a number of 1 to 10; X is hydrogen or an ionic hydrophilic group; m is a number of 0 to 1,000; and n is a number of 0 to 1,000: (2) (wherein R?2 and R3¿ are each hydrogen or methyl; x is a number of 0 to 12; and y is a number of 0 or 1).</p> |
