The multi-purpose unit has a lower frame with flat surface element (6) hinged at one end so that it can swivel between a normal horizontal position and an inclined backrest position. An additional seat element (7) fits flat underneath in the normal position but can be raised by lever gears (16, 17, 18, 19) to a suitable seat height. The flat surface element and at least one gear are coupled by a coupling (20) so that when the flat element swivels into the backrest position the seat element is automatically raised, and vice versa.
