A method and apparatus for detecting the presence of a closure (14) on a container (12) and determining whether the closure (14) is properly seated includes at least two fiber optic heads (18,20)positioned opposite one anoth er on either side of container transport mechanism. The optic heads (18,20) fac e one another through the path of travel of a container (12). The optic fibers of the receiving head (18) are arranged in a rectangular shape, narrow in th e horizontal direction and long in the vertical direction. The optic heads (18,20) are connected to an optical sensor (22) with an analog output. As a container (12) with a closure (14) travels down the transport mechanism, the closure (14) interrupts portions of the light beam directed at the receiving head (18). The optical sensor (22) generates a trace signal as the closure (14) moves down the conveyor. A processor (24) samples the analog signal and determines the presence and/or position of the closure (14) therefrom.</SDOA B>
