A composite elements (I) has a layer structure comprising: (i) 2-20 mm metal, plastic or wood; (ii) 10-300 mm of a bitumen-containing mixture; and (iii) 2-20 mm metal, plastic or wood. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) the production of (I) by introducing a molten or plasticized bitumen-containing mixture (ii) between layers (i) and (iii), or by applying molten or plasticized (ii) to the surface of layer (i) and then fixing layer (iii) onto (ii), or by adhesively bonding (ii) with (i) and (iii); and (b) ships or buildings containing (I).
