Bistable display operating method by applying write voltage so that cells are held unstably in second state and return to initial state when voltage is removed

The method involves only applying a write voltage to at least part of the cells in an unstable mode, in such a way that the respective cell is held unstably in a second state. When the write voltage is removed, the cell returns to a first state. The write voltage is maintained for a maximum time period that is shorter than the switching time for the cell to switch from one state to the other.
