A coating applied to a substrate is irradiated with electromagnetic waves mostly in the infra-red (IR) region. Output density of the radiation is preferably >= 100 kW/sq m, more preferably >= 200 kW/sq m and even more preferably >= 500 kW/sq m. Independent claims are included for the following: (a) the process equipment which includes an IR emitter, a system for continuous or interval movement of a substrate past the emitter and a radiation control unit; (b) a substrate with a coating produced by the claimed process; (c) a use of a substrate in automobile, chemical, semi-conductor and textile manufacture, building construction, homes and equipment; (d) a computer programme for the process; (e) a data carrier with the claimed computer programme. Preferred Features: The wavelength at the maximum intensity ensures that the coating absorbs energy uniformly over the entire thickness. Duration of IR treatment is /}30 sec, preferably /}10 sec, more preferably /}5 sec and even more preferably /}2 sec.
