PURPOSE: A method for controlling air conditioner for power saving is provided to prevent over-cooling by efficiently controlling operation of a compressor. CONSTITUTION: A method includes the steps of: a first step(S1) determining standard frequencies for each of indoor and outdoor temperatures and calculating standard operational current values for each of the standard frequencies; a second step(S2,S3) measuring the indoor and outdoor temperatures and determining whether a compressor is to be operated or not when a user selects power saving operation; a third step(S4,S5,S6) reading the standard frequency and the standard operational current value using the indoor and outdoor temperature measured in the second step and operating at the test standard frequency for fixed period; a fourth step(S7,S8,S10) measuring current operational current value for operation at the test standard frequency and comparing with the standard operational current value; and a fifth step(S9,S11,S12,S13,S14,S15) executing frequency control at stages based on the test standard frequency or settling an ultimate operational frequency according to the comparison in the fourth step.
