The method involves early detection of an impact with an impact object (7) using pre-crash sensors and deploying a crumple zone extension (6) in the impact direction depending on pre-crash signals. The pre-crash sensor signals are used to determine the effective mass of the impact object for adaptive ignition of restraining arrangements. An Independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the above method.
