PURPOSE: Provided are biodegradable copolymers containing functional groups, which can transfer pharmaceutical and bioactive material to an organism by bonding the pharmaceutical and bioactive material to the functional groups. CONSTITUTION: The biodegradable copolymers contain the polymers comprising aspartic anhydride and PEG by turns and are produced by a process comprising the steps of: (a) synthesizing N-CBz-L-aspartic anhydride units from N-CBz-L-aspartic acid; (b) reacting the N-CBz-L-aspartic anhydride units and the PEG with a low molecular weight in the presence of an acid catalyst to synthesize precursors; (c) melting and polycondensing the precursors in the presence of a TIP catalyst to synthesize N-CBz-poly(L-aspartic acid-co-PEG); and (d) releasing the CBz protection from the N-CBz-poly(L-aspartic acid-co-PEG) to make poly(L-aspartic acid-co-PEG).
