Process for preparation of pigmented ink jet inks

There is provided a process for the rapid preparation of ultrafine particle size pigmented ink jet inks comprising the steps of:- (A) Providing a milling formulation comprising at least one pigment, at least one dispersant, and an aqueous liquid carrier; (B) milling this formulation in a bead mill or a triple roll mill in the presence of a milling medium; (C) separating the milling medium; (D) dispersing the mixture by passing it through a high pressure liquid homogeniser at a liquid pressure of at least 1000 psi.; and then (E) diluting the mixture from step (D) to obtain an ink jet ink having a pigment concentration suitable for ink jet printers.
