A reclining device including a recess formed as a low-rigidity portion in a lateral portion of each of slide pawls 15 which faces a lateral wall surface of a guide groove of a stationary disc 11(the lateral wall surface of a bearing wall portion 11d). The stationary disc holds the slide pawls 15. If an enormous circumferential turning force is applied to the slide pawls 15 from a ratchet 12c, the recess 15g functions as a point upon which a pawl body 15a of each of the slide pawls 15 is deflected in the direction in which the turning force is applied As a result, the pawl body 15a quickly sinks into the lateral wall surface of the bearing wall portion 11d.
