<p>A water treatment preparation comprising commuted fibrous vegetable matter which has been treated so that the cellulose or lignin on the outside of the vegetable matter has been removed, leaving the inner fibres exposed. This may be achieved by adding alkali to the vegetable matter, in particular caustic soda (NaOH). The vegetable matter may be straw derived from wheat, barley, oats or rye, or may be a blend of straw, a major component of which is barley straw. The vegetable matter may be provided in the form of pellets. Also claimed is a water treatment kit comprising a container and the water treatment preparation. The container may comprise a mesh of netted fabric. A method of manufacturing the preparation comprising comminuting fibrous vegetable matter and treating this with alkali, is also claimed. An exothermic reaction between the vegetable matter and the alkali may be induced by applying heat and/or pressure. A method of treating still water to moderate algae growth by submerging the water treatment preparation in the still water to be treated, is also claimed.</p> |
