PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a banana-shaped liquid crystal or mesogenic compound which has high chemical stability, mechanical stability, heat stability and high electric resistance, has a permanently fixed molecular structure, exhibits the low temperature dependency of optical physical properties, and is suitable for ferroelectric or anti-ferroelectric devices, polymerized anisotropic materials and optical thin films. SOLUTION: A banana-shaped polymerizable mesogenic compound represented by the general formula (I): P-(Sp-X)n-M1-Y1-B-Yu-M2-R (I) [P is a polymerizable group; Sp is a spacer group; X, Y1 and Y2 are each independently O, COO, OCO, or the like; (n) is 0 or 1; M1, M2 are each independently a mesogen; B is a divalent cyclic group; R is H, a halogen, CN, or the like].
