At least part of a piece of wood (13-15) is passed through an open fixture (18, 34) which can be moved parallel to the piece of wood between a fixed and non-fixed position, so that one end of the piece of wood protrudes from the fixture, and this fixture is automatically closed by a mechanical unit (40) so that the protruding end comes to rest next to the wood machining device sensors.
