PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a proper printing process according to the kinds of paper without taking a set changing action when changing the paper in a printer coping with a plurality of kinds of continuous paper including label paper and marked paper. SOLUTION: A plurality of kinds of paper roll P including the label paper P2 stuck with a plurality of labels 19 at prescribed intervals on a continuous mount 18 and the marked paper P3 stuck with marks 20 at prescribed intervals on the continuous paper is selectively set, and the paper roll P is printed at prescribed positions while being conveyed. This printer 10 is provided with a reference position detecting sensor 21 detecting the transmission receiving level and the reflection receiving level of the light irradiated to the paper roll P, and the kind of the paper roll P is determined based on the transmission receiving level and the reflection receiving level while the paper roll P is conveyed.
